Net Neutrality Thanksgiving 2017 Vote is happening and your internet will change forever.

The FCC is about to announce a vote to slash net neutrality rules, allowing ISPs like Verizon, Comcast & At&t to block apps, slow websites, and charge fees to control what you see & do online. Once they announce the vote, it’s hard to stop. But if we flood them with calls now, *Congress* can stop the vote.

What is Net Neutrality?

“Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers and governments regulating most of the Internet must treat all data on the Internet the same, and not discriminate or charge differentially by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or method of communication. For instance, under these principles, internet service providers are unable to intentionally block, slow down or charge money for specific websites and online content.” Wikipedia

What would happen if we lost the Net Neutrality vote this Thanksgiving?

To start with one example, blocked content. You visit a website you love but it may contain negative reviews of a wealthy business or tricks to go around their ‘only the dealer’ can help you with that kind of thing. The wealthy business contact your internet provider and for a hefty fee the website you want to go to is not there. Just a pretty page that says this website is blocked. No questions. No comments. Your not getting to it and they made sure of it.

A little dramatic? I wish.

Do a Google Search for countries with restricted internet. You can see they love it (can you sense the sarcasm?).

The next major issue is fast lanes which we kind of have right now with lite internet, high speed internet, super high speed lighting ‘Micheal Bay’ internet. Just to be clear, the signal to your house is the same for all the types of internet just listed. At the internet provider home base they tinker with settings to restrict your data flow, they also provide outdated garbage modems and finally can restrict your access outside your home in that little green box on your lawn.

To me, making a comparison would be buying an American V8 muscle car and monthly you have to pay GM/FORD/MOPAR a fee to use all of your engines cylinders. Imagine the operator, ‘Excuse me sir, the basic package only includes 4 cylinders but for an additional fee we can unlock the six cylinder package. If you want to really experience the thrill of the speeds you want for another additional fee we have the top package.”

If we did this with phone service could you imagine that operator. ‘This is 911, you do not have the platinum package please hold.” connecting to a user with the top phone service package “yes sir, you have a splinter and there trash in your driveway? We will send a few units immediately.” After likely a whole lot of hold time, the operator reconnects with the basic phone package user “In your plan you only have access to three 911 calls per year and have exceeded the quantity. This call with cost an additional fee to continue. Sir I care you live in a violent neighborhood and people are dying as long as you have a valid credit card on file.”
